Free Trade

  • Until recently, most countries protected their economies through tarrif barriers in which imports were taxed. This had the effect of discouraging international trade.

  • There is now been a growing belief that countries benefit from encouraging free trade. The European Common Market started this trend. Now several regional international free markets exist, including NAFTA (the U.S., Canada, and Mexico). And the World Trade Organization which includes most of the world's countries, is also attempting to reduce trade barriers globally.
